JONATHAN HULTÉN Interview – ”No bird soars too high if he soars by his own wings”

[For the english version of the interview, please scroll down]

The Dark Night Of The Soul“

”You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough”, ”The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom”, ”He who desires but acts not breeds pestilence” und ”No bird soars too high if he soars by his own wings”.

Also ich würd’s kaufen. Just sayin‘.

ENGLISH VERSION
Since August, this little email interview was caught in the cozy purgatory of the internet, in constant fight against busy band schedules, but as everyone knows, good things come to those who wait – just like the solo EP „The Dark Night Of The Soul“ from TRIBULATION’s guitarist Jonathan Hultén, who is normally walking different paths with his death metal / vintage rock chimera, but still spent his freetime brewing a beautiful little collection of acoustic songs underneath his bed. In September 2017, the dreamy, curageous and bizarrely magical tracks written, recorded and performed by Jonathan saw the daylight in form of a debut EP, before he presented them to whole Europe as support act of Crippled Black Phoenix. Currently, the 28-year-old Swede is already back on the road with his main duty TRIBULATION, but just like the internet, Jonathan’s head – permanently filled with new unconventional ideas – does not forget. Five months later, thanks to a fortunate WiFi spot on a day off, the interview worked out. And just like every time when having a chat with him, it was definitely worth the wait.
When did you first feel the need to develop both musical sides inside of you, the soft and the aggressive one? For most other musicians it would feel like an impossible task to be a successful extreme metal musician and singer/songwriter at the same time, but for you it seemed absolutely natural? (even Nergal had to take some criticism for his country project…)
As a child I was drawn to the more dramatic and heavy side of music, but only a few years later I picked up an acoustic guitar and developed a need to express myself through singing. Growing up I hung out with a lot different people with a lot of different tastes in music so to me it was as natural to listen to Morbid Angel as to José Gonzales or Looptroop. I performed a couple of times as a singer-songwriter when I was around seventeen-nineteen years old, but when I moved away from my hometown I abruptly stopped, suddenly convinced that it is ONLY metal that I should be putting my energy into. Eventually it turned out that I couldn’t keep myself from writing acoustic material and after a few years the urge to sing again had gotten so big that I realized I had to do it or die very unhappy. So absolutely, since it has always been a part of me it only felt natural to finally materialize what I had been carrying inside for so long.

Your music videos are little pieces of art in themselves and ‚Nightly Sun‘ is very homogeneous with many of your painting and previous artworks. How difficult was it for you to put this style into moving pictures? And for ‚Anguished Are The Young‘: Why in particular did you choose Venice as setting for it?
It proved to be somewhat difficult figuring out how to produce and translate the images that I had in my head into a video. I had no previous knowledge in how to create or use special effects and very limited experience working with Final Cut. I had to improvise my way forward and find MacGyver solutions along the way. But it really helped knowing exactly what I wanted it to look like, so although it took some extra time and effort I eventually reached a result I felt happy with.
As for choosing Venice for ‚Anguished Are The Young‘ it came to be by coincidence but totally made sense in the end. Me and Viveka Goyanes (excellent photographer and fashion designer) had been planning to go to Venice for a while to collaborate on an art project. Some time into the planning stages we also came up with the idea of collaborating on the next video for the solo project as the decadent but splendorous architecture and atmosphere of the city fits very well with what the song is about.
‚Anguished Are The Young‘ deals with the disorientation and helplessness of the modern youth, if I’m not mistaken. How autobiographical would you consider this song and do you still see yourself striving for a real direction in life or have you found it in your music by now? (‚Leaving‘ or ‚Nightly Sun‘ seem to have more optimistic vibes however)
Good question! It’s very autobiographical but also works on a general level. The idea is that helplessness and disorientation is universal, ageless and applicable to everyone. The music and the lyrics of ‚Anguished…‘ were originally written when I was seventeen years old, so what you hear and read is actually the thoughts and feelings of a teenage-version of myself. The reason I picked it up ten years later was that I found myself in a similar position in life as back then; feeling completely disoriented and full of doubt about my choices – but at the same time very inspired. It made a lot of sense to make the first step of this new singer-songwriter-journey into a descent where these sensations of confusion and frustration could be acknowledged and be lived out. Like how the Divine Comedy starts with Dante running around in the forest having lost his way I want this chapter in my life to also start at the lowest point of my being. Then it can become like a purging; I am resetting myself and start from scratch. That is why the video of the song is in black and white (the city imagery symbolizes the inner maze) and why the EP is called ”The Dark Night of the Soul”.

Inside the booklet you have the painting titled ‚Nigredo‘ – if I’m not mistaken, the expression derives from Latin, meaning that something has to die and rot, before it ascends into a higher state of life; an idea that also shines through on some Tribulation songs. How often in life did you face the thought that you had to give up and lose everything in order to become a bigger person (or better musician)?
I am thinking about that every day. How far am I willing to go and what am I willing to sacrifice in order to follow my dreams and to grow as a human being? Or does the former actually make the latter impossible? And am I even walking on right path to achieve anything as such? I have no answers to these questions, but I have to keep on walking forward while I am pondering over them. My guts on the other hand are simple, they are telling but one thing; ”Do! Create! Feel! Move! Transcend!” However distracted or distant my mind is I can always rely on my guts to give me guidance and the courage to keep on going forward.
You recorded the songs in your own room, which surely makes things easier – nevertheless the plan to release an EP has been with you for several years, so it didn’t seem to be that easy in the end. Which one of the 4 tracks took you the longest to write or record?
”…And the Pillars Tremble” proved to be a hard nut to crack as it consists solely out of vocal harmonies and that is usually the hardest thing to get down. I am also a perfectionist which does not really help in terms of working faster, but at least I can feel happy with the result once it is done. But I have a feeling that the more I do this the faster I will reach the result I am aiming for, so there will definitely be an album coming out soon!
Did you ever set any boundaries to your own creativity, saying ‚okay, that might make things a little too weird‘ or are these limits exactly what you aim for?
It is around these limits where the really interesting things are taking place. When I have one foot on the earth and one in the sky without tipping over to one or the other is when I feel like I am at my best. That requires me to step out of my comfort zone. Only if I dare to go beyond my own limits I feel like I am truly being rewarded. Everytime I play safe I end up feeling regretful and unfulfilled, like I have wasted my time. I find a lot of inspiration and support in William Blake’s ”Proverbs of Hell” which are very good at putting this idea into words with quotes like; ”You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough”, ”The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom”, ”He who desires but acts not breeds pestilence” and ”No bird soars too high if he soars by his own wings”.
Do you have any further tour dates planned or is your focus back on TRIBULATION?

There are some plans being made, but beside the show at Roadburn in April I have nothing booked at the moment. Regarding the focus shifting to Tribulation I will make my utmost to put both projects on the same priority level. Both are very important to me and it would hurt too much to have to choose between them. Even here there is a balance to be found.
To stay updated about the future of his solo project, give Jonathan a little thumb up here on Facebook or have a look at his homepage.
The debut EP „The Dark Night Of The Soul“ was released in September via Nightly Sun Records and is available here. Currently, Jonathan is touring Europe with TRIBULATION, and their fourth album titled „Down Below“ is due to come out this Friday. If I were you, I’d buy it. Just sayin‘.
